Jean-Paul Gaultier

About the brand

The Jean-Paul Gaultier brand was born in 1976. In the collection "A wardrobe for two" a Gaultier flagship style: the skirt for men appeared for the first time.

In 1988 the brand diversified by creating a children’s clothing collection. The creator and his brand became a true legend in 1990. Jean-Paul Gaultier designed costumes for Madonna, including the famous conical bra.

Success was dazzling. Jean-Paul Gaultier became the inevitable creator of the moment. The film industry called on him to create costumes for blockbusters like Luc Besson’s “the Fifth Element.”

Jean-Paul Gaultier is a reference in the sector. He has worked with Mylène Farmer, Joaquim Cortes and Pedro Almodovar.

1995 saw the birth of the fragrance Le Mâle, which is still successful today. Two years later, the first collection "Haute Couture" was presented: Gaultier Paris in 1997, Le Hussard (The Hussar) in 2002, Les Samourais (the Samurai) in 2004. All these fashion shows were successful.

In September 2009, he designed costumes for the Snow White ballet of Angelin Preljocaj. This was a big challenge for the designer who said: "Now, I’m entering a story, I’m entering the world of a choreographer. That's what's interesting and almost destabilizing because I lose all my bearings. It's like a conversation; you are not the only one speaking."
"The bad boy of fashion", because we like to call him that, will never cease to surprise and amaze us.

Designer

Born in Arcueil in 1952, Jean-Paul Gaultier had an early passion for fashion. A famous anecdote tells that he carried out his first fashion experiments on his teddy bear. He spent most of his time with his grandmother, where he made his first sketch inspired by the urban jungle that surrounded him.
When he was 18, he joined the Pierre Cardin group and the following year he worked with Jacques Esterel and Jean Patou. He would return to work for Cardin in 1974.

In 1976 he created his first collection. He made a prestigious entry into the fashion world. Gaultier's style was born. The creator likes to surprise, mixing different patterns. His personal style doesn’t leave anyone indifferent and his style has made him a cult figure.

"The terrible child of French fashion" constantly changes the fashion codes. His outstanding success allows him to lead a fight against all forms of discrimination and intolerance. The themes of his collections are excellent examples of his desire to overturn the codes and mix styles: A wardrobe for 2, Black Beauties.

He became the darling of fashion. In March 2007, he was the subject of an exhibition in the Fashion and textile Museum. In February 2008, Marion Cotillard was wearing a Gaultier Couture dress when she received her Caesar and her Oscar for best actress for her role in La Vie en Rose.

The year 2008 also marked the launch of its latest women's fragrance, Madame, with Agyness Deyn as its icone.

Fall Winter 2014 Collection

This season, Jean-Paul Gaultier paints the portrait of a strong, independent, and yet sensitive woman. Inspired by the medieval period, the Gaultier woman is a contemporary warrior. Half rock and half feminine, the new Autumn-Winter 2013 collection is designed for the modern, dynamic and flourishing woman.
Jean-Paul Gaultier offers accessories that have volume and extravagance. The belts are wide, like a shell protecting the fragile body of the bohemian warrior. The materials are wild, with leather and fur, but also soft and feminine with mesh or muslin. The colors remain dark with touches of burgundy and green, and accentuates the rock attitude.
