Lady in Red

Autumn, season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. And shades of deep red. As Keats may or may not have said. Plum, burgundy (or Bordeaux, as the French prefer) and maroon are this season’s trending tones. Whether you favour a monochromatic approach for a head to toe fall fashion moment or prefer to add pale blue, dusky pink or navy, burgundy is most certainly the new neutral.

The brands to watch

Deep reds come into their own when worked into accessories. Bags and shoes are never more chic than when rendered in burgundy calf leather, never cooler than when dressed in maroon suede. Jérôme Dreyfuss, Jimmy Choo and Burberry have all understood this particular fashion fundamental. For the former, the result is resolutely laid back – big, slouchy bags in soft leathers in shades of plum – whilst at Choo and Burberry classic pumps and structured bags shine bright in their autumnal garb.
«I would recommend a total burgundy look that is just so much cooler and more modern than black.»

a word from our buyer

Tell us a little bit about this season’s burgundy trend.

Burgundy is the colour of the season because it’s sensual, rich and warm. This year we have seen this versatile alternative to black on catwalks around the world.

Which designers have been working with burgundy this year?

We saw great use of the colour in the Marc Jacobs show with some total looks in burgundy and also at Acne Studios where there was an interesting approach that played with transparency.

Do you have a favourite product that really embodies the trend?

If I had to pick one bag, it would be the Proenza Schouler Hava shoulder bag which is beautifully made in textured calf leather.

How do you recommend mixing burgundy into your everyday looks?

You can go for a total burgundy look that is just so much cooler and more modern than black or you can go for an even stronger option by mixing burgundy with pink and red.

How to wear it

Be brave, be bold, be burgundy! Head to toe plum velvet will earn you double fashion points this season. Pale, washed out jeans, a cream lace blouse and burgundy pumps or boots will suffice if the all-over look feels overpowering.
